When you look at humic substances for human consumption and medicinal purposes, we must first look to the ancient Indian system of medicine known as Ayurveda.  It is there that we will find the ancient practice of ingesting Shilajit (also called silajit, salajeet or mumijo, and momia).

It is reported that Shilajit was originally discovered by the observation of highly intelligent white monkeys in the Himalayan mountains, who would eat a dark-colored mineral pitch which exudes from the sides of the mountain under the pressure of higher altitudes.  It is also referred to as asphaltum.

Noted herbalist and author David Winston includes Shilajit in his wonderful book Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief.
